It uses 2026–27 resident tax rates plus the Medicare levy, counts 80% of other income, uses the higher of your expenses or a basic living-cost benchmark, counts 3.8% of card limits as a monthly commitment, and tests the loan at your rate plus a 3% buffer over 30 years, as lenders typically do. Every lender's rules differ, so your broker will confirm your real borrowing power.

Every dollar in an offset account is subtracted from your loan balance before interest is charged, so you pay less interest and can be loan-free sooner, while keeping your savings available.
over the life of the loan
Your repayment stays the same at $0. The offset just means more of it goes to the loan, not interest.
Estimate only. Assumes a variable principal-and-interest loan with a 100% offset, a constant rate, and that the offset money is not withdrawn. Excludes fees, such as package fees that often come with offset accounts.

Compare what you pay now with a lower rate on the same balance and time left. Switching costs are included, so you can see when the move pays for itself.

Estimate only. Assumes principal-and-interest repayments, monthly, with both rates staying the same for the rest of the loan. "Saved over the loan" is interest saved minus switching costs. Switching costs can include discharge, application, valuation and government fees, and any break cost on a fixed rate. Some lenders offer cashback that can offset these.

About this calculator
A balloon (or residual) is a lump sum left owing at the end of the loan. It lowers your regular repayments, but you’ll need to pay it, refinance it or trade in to cover it when the term ends.
Business buyers often use a chattel mortgage, where you own the asset from day one. Your broker can explain which structure suits you.
Before you sign
- Make sure you can cover the balloon when the loan ends.
- Compare the comparison rate, not just the repayment.
- Get pre-approved before you visit the dealer, so you know your budget.
Car & asset finance calculator: common questions
What is a balloon payment?
A lump sum you owe at the end of the loan term. A balloon lowers your regular repayments, but you pay more interest overall because more of the loan stays outstanding for longer.
Is a balloon payment a good idea?
It can suit people who want lower repayments or plan to trade in, especially for business vehicles. It’s less suitable if you’d struggle to pay the lump sum when the loan ends.
Can I finance a private sale?
Yes. Many lenders finance private sales as well as dealer purchases, usually with a few extra checks on the vehicle.
